Yesterday, Adobe updated the Lightroom mobile client for iOS, adding in-camera HDR capture capabilities to any iPhone capable of shooting in RAW/DNG – the iPhone 6S and later.
The ability to shoot DNGs with Lightroom (and VSCO and Camera+ and so on) has been a godsend for those that like to shoot with the iPhone and aren’t happy with Apple’s idea of what noise reduction and sharpening should look like.
But to shoot HDR in-camera, with no real postprocessing needed… now that’s a whole new ballgame. I played around with my dessert tonight, just to see what it could do for me.

Both these images were shot under the same conditions and corrected for white balance in post (the cream was the white). No special lighting was used, just the dining room overhead lamp.
No other post-processing was done to either image, apart from a crop. I didn’t bother trying to make anything sharper, colour tweaks, contrasts, nothing of the sort. Just SOOC+crop+WB.
In my haste, I forgot to check my auto-ISO shutter speed settings on the X100F, so this wound up being shot at 1/200 at way to high an ISO… 6400 to be precise. I only noticed after I ate my subject, so this is what I was stuck with.
In both cases, I have to admit I’m blown away. I’m blown away by the iPhone’s game-changing in-camera results, and I’m blown away by that X-Trans III sensor’s ability in low light and high ISO.
The berries were excellent, too.

the i phone clarity is amazing, Eric. But i think the Fuji pick looks better as a ‘foodie’ shot. better white blue contrast and the berries look juicier. that’s just me though!

I agree – the X100F shot is better — although out of focus, as a Facebook commenter pointed out — with a somehow "richer" feel. I could probably have processed the iPhone image more in LR to get a similar look, but that’s not the point, is it? Look what you get SOOC, wihout having to do any work.
The iPhone has definitely come a long way and the new HDR raw capability in LR is amazing. That being said, I like the Fuji image better here. An iPhone 7 comparison would be interesting as well.
I was wondering that, too. The iPhone 7 has a little wider aperture and a "bigger" (more MP) sensor, right? Unfortunately I don’t have one handy.
