New Year, New Projects

I’m a longtime fan of photo projects; they’re great at keeping my eye and shutter-button finger limber. Over the past 10 years I’ve attempted 8 365 (one photo per day) projects on Flickr, yet only completed 5 of them. The failed projects have almost always been because of burning while doing back-to-back 365 projects. 2022 was one of those burnout years; I should have known better than to continue after a successful 2021 project. It must be force of habit and FOMO that keeps me going when I should be hanging things up.

Another project that’s kept me busy for the past 9 years is the “100 x” project, which works a little differently. It’s all about choosing a theme (my ‘x’) and making 100 photos during the course of the year that match the theme. Even though it’s “only” 100 photos, it’s easier said than done. I’ve managed to complete 7 of my 9 attempts, so I guess they are easier to complete than a 365. 🤔

I knew I was going to do my 100 x for 2023, that was a foregone conclusion. After failing last year’s 365 almost halfway through, I had sworn that 2023 wasn’t going to be a 365 year for me. Then I saw who was getting involved in this year’s edition, and I knew I couldn’t pass it up. (FOMO!) There were some old friends from previous years’ projects who were coming back after a few years’ hiatus and it felt like the band was getting back together. How could I miss that?

Anyhow, check out where I’m at with my projects. Here’s my 365 thus far (it’s not much… we’re on Day 3, after all):

For this year’s 100 x, I have chosen photo essays as my ‘x’. I’ll produce a number of short essays of 4 to 10 related images, for a total of 100 images in 2023. The theme for each individual essay will vary throughout the year, but they will all have one thing in common: they will all be SOOC (straight out of camera) photos made using my Fujifilm X-Pro3 with the Voigtländer NOKTON 35mm f/1.2 lens, using the same custom film simulation per photo essay. (Imagine if you will I had loaded a roll of film and couldn’t change much beyond exposure and composition.) Here’s where I’m at thus far:

I finally took a look at the 100x group and see it’s your group. That’s great. I’m not a fan of 365 except for beginners but I’m intrigued by the 100x. It’s been a really busy start to 2023 but life is beginning to settle somewhat so maybe it’s something I may tackle. I know a gal who did 100x last year and her images ended up being something she could easily create a zine or book with. As late as it is, I’m going to give it some serious thought. Great idea for a group Eric!

Hi Diane. Thanks for looking into the 100 x! Something tells me this is the kind of photo project that would be right up your alley… you sure I can’t twist your arm a little? 😉
